US Signal Corps Laboratories

The U.S. Signal Corps established a laboratory for testing and development of military transmission equipment in Camp Vail in 1917.

In the labs, commercial sets were checked for army use suitability and partly sets were developed or modified in cooperation with commercial manufacturers.

In 1925, the location was renamed Fort Monmouth. Here, in view of the emerging World War II, new communication devices were developed; after the attack on Pearl Harbor, emphasis was placed on the development of radar and microwave communication equipment.

As the military radio sets were needed in large quantities, numerous American manufacturers were invited for licence production. The sets were manufactured under Contracts, the Contract Number and the manufacturer are usually indicated on the type plates of U.S. sets.
