SE-218/m: Short-/ Longwave Station 43 / G-Station

Kurz Lang Station 43 (Short Long Station 43), KL43 resp. SE-218/m; developed and produced Zellweger, Uster.

The Zellweger Company, based in Uster, did develop the Funkstation Kurz Lang 43 (Short Long Station 43) based on the components of the FL 40 (Mobile Light Station 40) in the years 1943/44 to replace the Telefunken Short- / Longwave Station Kurz - Lang - Station / D-Station. Because of the World War II, Telefunken was inable to provide enough systems of the shortwave / longwave station which was used in the Anti Aircraft Coordination Network.

In contrast to the FL40m the KL 43 has a better coverage of high frequencies in the shortwave range used by the airforce. The station was mostly used onboard a truck; when the roof antenna was used, the station could even be operated while on the move.

Technical Data

Power Supply

  • Generator: Three phase generator Uster (50V, 150 Hz) whch can be driven from a fuel operated or electric motor; for mobile operation, the station can be powered from a vehicle generator built in the truck.

Dimensionen

  • complete station equipment 817 kg
  • the transmitter is stored in chest No.5, 720 x 600 x 730 mm, without the chest 75 kg, with the chest included 106 kg
  • the receiver is stored in chest No.6, 660 x 580 x 730 mm, without the chest 75 kg, with the chest included 109 kg
  • the complete GM-Station in the truck has the dimensions of 6,6 x 2,15 x 2,85 m and a total weight og 5000 kg.

Accessories

TTG (Fernbetriebsgerät)

  • for mobile use, a roof antenna is used
  • for shortwave operation, a 12 m mast with five radial counterpoise wires is provided.
  • for longwave operation, a 30 m long wire antenna between two 12 m masts is provided, the counterpoise wires were laid on the ground.
  • the „G-Station“ is equipped for remote operation. On the receiver side, a remote control unit with an AF generator is mounted on the receiver track. On the transmitter side, an additional remote control unit, the so called TTG (Tontastgerät) is mounted between the transmitter and the field telephone connection. There is a selector for telephony, telegraphy operation (with a 900 Hz filter) and service telephone connection.

Operation

KL43 Sender betriebsbereit The mobile short-/ longwave station 43, KL 43 or so called G Station is a wireless station mounted on a light truck consisting of equipment of the FL40 with an extended frequency range. Thanks to the vehicle power generator and the roof antenna, the station can be operated while on the move.

As the station's transmitter, the reliable transmitter of the FL 40 with a modified frequency range is used. As found in the similar Telefunken D-Station, the transmitter is mounted on a metal frame.

In contrast to the transmitter of the FL 40, the frequency bands are much higher: 300 - 380 / 380 - 600 kHz and 3000 - 5330 / 5330 - 8000 and 8000 - 12000 kHz, the frequency of 8000 kHz can be calibrated with a luminous crystal.

The transmitter has three stages, a EBL21 in the oscillator / exciter stage, two EBL21 in frequency doubler stage and two OS41/1250 in the power amplifier stage. Operation modes are A1 (CW), A2 (modulated telegraphy) and A3 (telephony); the modulator stage (EBL21) acts on the grids of the power amplifier stage. The output power is switchable, in position „Einpfeifen“ („tune“) / „Low“ it is 5 - 7 Watt, in position „Medium“ 20 - 30 W and in position „High“ 80 - 120 W.

The plate voltage of 330 V in the exciter / modulator stages and 1200 V in in the power amplifier stage is generated from the three phase 50V / 150 Hz voltage via a transformer and four PV 200/600 rectifier valves.

KL43 Empfänger, einsatzbereit The receiver of the KL 43 is the „Allwellenempfänger Uster“ or E41 in in a variant with a reduced number of coils; it covers only 200 kHz - 24 MHz and has a special tuning knob with a fine tuning gear.

Development

Because Germany entered World War II and the telefunken wireless station D-Station was no longer availabe, a replacement was needed. Zellweger modified components of the FL40 according to the frequency requirements of the air force and the station was mounted on a light truck similar to its telefunken twin.

Of the GM-Station (mobile) in a light truck Berna (price 105'000.- Fr.) and as GK-Station (portable) in ten chests and two accumulators (price 60'000.- Fr.), initially 15 stations have been ordered. With later additions, the total number was 42 stations.

Einsatz

KL43 im Kastenwagen

Designated as „G-Station“, the KL 43 has been used in the anti aircraft coordination network of the Swiss air force / anti aircraft units.

After introduction of TO 51, the station got the new designation SE-218/m; after 1962 it was still in use by Landsturm Fk Kp until it was completely faded out in 1967.
