P-721: Telefunken PST 476/1

VHF direction finder P-721, Telefunken VHF direction finding system PST 476/1; manufactured by Telefunken GmbH, Ulm.

The VHF band PST 476/1 with a rotatable Adcock - H antenna was introduced in the early sixties. The VHF direction finder was designed to be more or less portable for field use with six payloads. P-721, image from www.hamfu.ch

Operation

In 1962, the portable Telefunken direction finding system PST 476/1 was procured for field use and was given the Army designation P-721.

The system consists of the heavyweight VHF receiver PE 476/1, technically corresponding to the Telefunken VHF receiver E 148Uk/1 with a direction finding adaptor, mounted on a solid tripod and the antenna support with azimuth scale.

The antenna with the two dipoles made of conspicuously thick tubes could be tilted to be used for signals with horizontal and vertical polarisation. The antenna support with the dipoles mounted and the tripod are made of non-metallic materials to prevent bearing errors.

The minimum bearing on the receiver is determined acoustically or by means of a field strength meter on the separate DF adaptor of the system.

E-148 Uk/1The E 148 Uk/1 receiver (PE476/1 with direction finding adaptor) is designed as a single conversion superhet with an IF of 10.7 MHz and variometer tuning; it covers the VHF range 22 - 88 MHz. It is equipped with seven EF800, six E88CC, two E180F, one EF804S and one StV150/30 stabiliser.

Operation modes CW (A1), A2, AM telephony (A3A) and FM telephony (F3E) can be selected.

The system is principally portable (six payloads of 60 - 100 kg, total weight 500 kg) and could be set up in the field. The direction finder operator sits on a special seat almost at ground level. A tarpaulin, which in my eyes resembles a shower curtain, protects against bad weather, and an „Aladdin“ petrol stove could be placed under the tarpaulin for heating.

In the field, the system is powered from a MAG 230 V / 400 W petrol generator or from the mains, when in stationary use.

Development

Use

From the DF system, designed by Telefunken Berlin in 1961/2, six units were purchased in 1962 and they remained in use until its liquidation in 1971.
