NG-TL

Netzanschlussgerät NGTL (Mains power supply); produced by Zellweger, Uster.

The Telefunken „Portable Light“ radio station (SE-210) which was introduced in 1935 was initially equipped only with a heaters and plate battery and a treadmill generator for power supply. The operation of the pedal generator, which was necessary for transmitting, was not that popular among the signalmen. That was the reason, that the signalmen looked for improvised power supply units, which of course meant a violation of the army regulations. Due to the increasing demand of the signal troop, Zellweger developed a power supply unit, which was added to the station equipment in 1942.

Technical Data

The mains power supply provides all necessary voltages to operate the radio sets TL (SE-210) and TL BBC (SE-212): the plate voltage 330 V (160 mA), heaters voltage 8,5 V (3,5 A), grid bias voltage 65 V (0,65 mA).

Power Supply

  • Mains: 120, 145, 220, 250 V; 160 VA

Dimensions

  • mm, 20.2 kg

Accessories

A small wooden box contains the power cord, a spare rectifier tube 83, spare fuses and a lamp socket outlet (the so called „Edison socket“). This device can be screwed into a normal lamp socket, if no wall outlet is available, and electrical devices can be plugged in - in Switzerland, the use of these devices is prohibited for safety reasons since many years.

Operation

The power supply unit is connected to the mains with the main switch in position „0“, and connected to mains by pressing the buttons on the circuit breakers. The mains voltage can be checked by the voltmeter.

With the generator cable, the mains power supply is connected to the battery case of the TL station.

Now the power supply is switched on with the mains switch, after a delay of around one minute, the plate voltage of 330 V is switched on.

Since the heaters accumulator of the TL is used for buffering, the power supply unit must only be used with the 6 V heaters accumulator connected to the battery case of the TL.

Technical Principle

The plate voltage of 330 V is rectified with a mercury rectifier tube. Since this must be pre-heated before applying the voltage, a bimetal switch ensures a delay of one minute until the high voltage is switched on.

To rectify the heaters voltage, selenium rectifiers are used in a bridge circuit. Since the voltage can drop due to aging of the rectifier, the voltage drop can be compensated.

Also the grid voltage is rectified with a selenium rectifier.

Two circuit breakers protect the mains voltage connector, a high-frequency filter in the mains supply prevents high frequency from the transmitter to flow back into the mains power installations. With a voltmeter, the applied mains voltage can be controlled.

Valve Layout

Rectifier valve 83, selenium rectifier 120/0,3 and 12/4,8.

Development

The mains power supply NGTL has been developed by Zellweger, Uster.

Fiel use

From 1942, the mains power supply and the supplementary antenna material has been delivered to the troops.
