====== SE-401: Motorized Wireless Station 44 ====== **Motorized Wireless Station 44**, **M44** resp. **SE-401**; developed and produced Zellweger, Uster. The Zellweger Company, based in Uster, did develop the **Funkstation Kurz Lang 43** (Short Long Station 43) based on the components of the FL40 (Mobile Light Station 40) in the years 1943/44 to replace the Telefunken Short- / Longwave Station Kurz - Lang - Station / D-Station, of which because of the World War II, Telefunken was not able to provide a sufficient number. Now, the call for a motorized radio station was heard at Zellweger. In fact, the FL40 was mobile, but a separate vehicle was needed to tow the trailer. So Zellweger developed the **Motorized Radio Station M44**.\\ The components of a standard FL40 were installed in similar steel tube frames and with similar auxiliary equipment like in the KL43 in a light truck; In contrast to the KL43, the station was equipped with a crank mast at the rear of the truck, like the one found on the FL40. ===== Technical Specifications ===== * Principle: Wireless station with separate transmitter and receiver * Transmitter: S-300, Transmitter of the FL40: Frequency Range: 0.19 - 0.715 MHz (in 3 ranges) and 1.5 - 4.5 MHz (in three ranges). * Receiver: E-601 resp. On the receiver side, a remote control unit with a tone generator is installed in the receiver frame. On the transmitter side, a similar device, the **TTG** ("Tontastgerät") is connected in the telephone line between the transmitter and the remote control post. The modes telephony, telegraphy (with a 900 Hz filter) and a service phone connection between remote post and the receiver / transmitter site can be selected. ===== Station Material ===== The **Motorized radio station 44**, abbreviated M44, is a wireless station built into a Berna truck. It consists of the transmitter and receiver components of the FL40. Thanks to the power supply from a built-in car generator and the roof antenna, the station can be operated while driving. The station is quite similar to the Short-long station 43 / "G-station" of the Air Force; in contrast to the KL, the standard components of the normal FL40 with their frequency range were used. The **transmitter** is the reliable FL40 transmitter, similar to the KL43 / G-Station, the transmitter is installed in a steel tube frame. The frequency ranges 190-240 / 240-400 / 400-715 kHz in the longwave range as well as 1.5-2.3 / 2.3-3.3 and 3.3-4.5 kHz in the shortwave range are covered. By means of a quartz crystal, the transmitter can be calibrated on the frequency of 4000 kHz. The transmitter has three stages, a de:EBL21 in the oscillator / exciter stage, two de:EBL21 in frequency doubler stage and two de:OS41/1250 in the power amplifier stage. Operation modes are A1 (CW), A2 (modulated telegraphy) and A3 (telephony); the modulator stage (de:EBL21) acts on the grids of the power amplifier stage. The output power is switchable, in position „Einpfeifen“ ("tune") / „Low“ it is 5 - 7 Watt, in position „Medium“ 20 - 30 W and in position „High“ 80 - 120 W. The plate voltage of 330 V in the exciter / modulator stages and 1200 V in in the power amplifier stage is generated from the three phase 50V / 150 Hz voltage via a transformer and four de:PV 200/600 rectifier valves. **Receiver** is the proven Uster / E41 All wave receiver, but only the 200 kHz - 24 MHz ranges are covered with seven coil inserts. A station clock is mounted to the right of the frequency coil. The truck Berna CR1D is equipped with a 65 hp four-cylinder diesel engine and with the built-in wireless station, it has a weight of 5070 kg. The vehicle is equipped with a three-piece L - roof antenna to operate thestation on the move. For shortwaves, a 14 m crank mast Magirus, similar to the one found in the FL40 is used, and for fixed operation for shortwave a 8 m and for longwaves 50 m long wire antenna between two 10 m masts is used. As with the FL40, the power is supplied via a gasoline or mains motor-fed converter group, which provides the 50 V / 150 Hz three-phase current. During driving, the converter is fed by the car generator. ==== Development ==== Four stations of the wireless station M44 were constrcted in 1943/44, and these were handed over to the troops "for experimental purposes" at a price of 105'000.- Fr. Everything has been prepared to produce this station in larger numbers at the end of the Second World War. ==== Mission ==== The four stations M44 were assigned to Signal Division 6 as individual stations. When troop order 61 was introduced, they were replaced by SE-222 in 1963 and were liquidated in 1967. ===== Technical Documentation ===== ==== Additional Information ==== * SE-401 / M44 on www.armyradio.ch * SE-401 / M44 on Hamfu website
